Pajarito Mountain: A History of Volunteerism

Pajarito Mountain Ski Area has a long tradition of volunteerism, which has helped to make this Ski Area what it is today.  Many individual Members have donated numerous hours during the summer to cut and chip slash, trim saplings from the ski trails and generously helped with the upkeep of the skiing and boarding areas.  The extensive Mountain Bike trail system has been developed and constructed by all volunteers.  The Ski Patrol, which is an all-volunteer group that spends hundreds of hours annually training and patrolling the slopes, is vital to the operation of the Ski Area.  The Ski Patrol also has developed a summer Mountain Bike patrol to aid the summer guests at the Ski Area.   The new Terrain Park was constructed this summer with help from volunteers. This summer the Snowsports School staff volunteered many hours to upgrade/repair the Snowsports School buildings.  Lastly, the Board of Directors (also all volunteers) contribute a huge amount of time and effort supporting the Ski Area. The staff and users of the Pajarito Mountain Ski Area are very appreciative of these and a variety of other volunteer activities too numerous to mention.

Recent Activities

Recently we had a special group of volunteers come to the mountain to help us.  Los Alamos Youth Leadership is made up of community minded high school students and their adult leaders to provide assistance to community organizations.  On Sunday, November 23, the Flashdance Crew of LAYL did a trash patrol from the parking lot below Townsite Chair to the top of Camp May.  They also walked both the lower and upper parking lots to pick up trash that has collected over the years.  The participants were, Chris Armstrong, Elliot Marcille, Micah Schmiedicke and Meghan Schroeder.  The Adults accompanying them were Art Brown and Bernadette Lauritzen.

Thanks to all the volunteers who help with and endless variety of tasks throughout the year.  It wouldn’t happen without you.
